I disagree with Brine Blank--the foot on the back and riding crop would be too much. What's here is a bit more subtle. It's not that he doesn't love her; it's just that he's feeling a little overwhelmed, and not in control of his own life.

It is a beautiful drawing. Before I looked at the larger version I read the center line of the sketchbook and the horizon line as cross hairs of a scope.
